It has been crucial to build good relationships with every student in my class. Seeing the kind words shows that I have been building positive relationships with my class.
Kindness club initiated an activity in the school where everyone in the class had a hand pinned to their back. Everyone walked around and wrote one positive thing about that person. Giving them a "pat on the back". Here is a picture of mine.

Over the past school year I have really found how instrumental it is to make sure you develop genuine relationships with your students. I have devoted time every day to get to know my students a little better. The result is that my students trust me, are willing to share things with me, and are respectful in the classroom. This helps with classroom management and helps when there is a problem in the classroom because we can come back from the blow up and make it better. I have also found that keeping parents in the loop as often as possible shows the students that we are all one united front trying to ensure we get their best. Parent involvement also helps shine a light on different behaviours in the classroom. I want every single one of students to leave at that end of the year know that I care about them. The only way to make sure that is the case is to put in the time throughout the year.
One focus at our school is Project Based Learning. Each grade gets the opportunity to do three rounds of PBL. Each project is about three weeks long and the students are given a driving question and they need to create a project around that. So far the Grade 6 has completed two rounds. The first was centered around Evidence and Investigation where they needed to develop a crime scene and develop evidence that suits their crime. The second was around establishing a healthy lifestyle. The second one was left pretty open for the students to decide what direction to take. We had many that chose to do healthy eating, some tackled mental health and wellness, while others looked at physical activity. Students were able to work with other classes and collaborate in new groups. We had many groups create Google presentations or videos to show their understanding, and some groups developed their own cookbook. It is amazing to see how creative and purposeful so many presentations were. For the second round of PBL students were assessed on their ability to work collaboratively, as well if they understood and explained why it is important to live a healthy lifestyle. This project really brought the school culture together as we were intermixing all grade 6 classes. It was extraordinary to watch them develop and create together.
So I have kind of abandoned my blog as of late but nonetheless here we are.
I have recently got an interim teaching position at a brand new school! It has been very busy as I has hired on after the school year had already begun. So I have been playing a bit of catch up over these past few weeks. I am very excited to be apart of this new school and joining the grade 6 team. Last week we took all the grade 6 class to Camp Evergreen. The students were able to try many different activities over the course of the day. We went horseback riding, canoeing, zip lining and many more. It was a really fun day for the students and the teachers! Here are a few photos from the day. I am just about to finish up my first week in PSII and need to assign grades to my two classes. The P.E. programs is a module based program. At the beginning of the semester students get to choose what activities they want to be apart of. It is great that the students get a choice but becomes difficult when you need to assign a grade after 5 days. P.E assessments tend to be a bit subjective because there are so many students in the class and the teacher is not able to see what is going on with every student every class. I do not want the grade I give them to be a surprise so I need to continue building relationships. Next week I am going to focus on building these relationships and keeping students up to date with their assessments. If a student is not showing me their skill level, activley participating, or creating a safe environment their marks will refelct their actions. As the teacher I should give them the opportunity to improve mid week if I feel they are not going to meet the expectations of the class. Keeping the students involved in their marks will help both me and the students when it comes to report cards. The students will know what I expect because I have
In class we have been talking about different ways to instruct in PE than the typical stand and deliver. A new technique that is coming in PE is the sports education model. I have attached a powerpoint to explain it more in detail. This model turns the typical unit plans into actual seasons. You would break your students into teams and they would assign a coach who would coordiante practices, a captain, they could have a publisher who would watch the game and write a report. Every day throughout the season the roles would change. The nice thing with this model is it may get those who do not like gym class more involved and invested into sport. If someone is injured instead of just sitting on the side lines or in the office they can still participate by being a coach, statistician, publicist, etc. Something unique to this model is it frees up the PE teacher from instruction. The students are independent and work within their teams. Now the teacher is able to build report with the students, provide some suggestion and have more one on one time with the students. The teacher is also able to give a lot more feedback because they do not spend time standing and delivering material.
